TLDEF Praises Bruce Jenner's Courage in Acknowledging Authentic Self

New York, New York - The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) congratulates Bruce Jenner, who tonight publicly came out as transgender. Jenner made the announcement in an interview with Diane Sawyer during a two hour special on ABC News, becoming one of the best-known openly transgender figures in the world and putting to rest widespread speculation about Jenner’s identity in the national media.

Statement from TLDEF Executive Director Michael Silverman

“TLDEF applauds Jenner’s bravery in coming out publicly as transgender. Jenner’s fame as a champion athlete and television star guarantees that this story will be heard around the world. We hope that Jenner inspires others to find the courage to be open about who they are. And we hope that Jenner’s message of authenticity and openness will shine a light on the unique challenges that transgender people face and help further equality. We support every transgender person’s right to come out at a time that is right for them, and wish Jenner every happiness moving forward in the world authentically.”
