Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund Voices Disappointment and Calls for Justice In Eric Garner Case
New York, NY — The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) expresses disappointment and calls for justice after a Staten Island grand jury declined to indict a New York City police officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner last July.
Statement from Executive Director Michael Silverman
“TLDEF sends our heartfelt condolences to the family of Eric Garner who not only lost their loved one, but also lost a sense of justice following the grand jury’s decision not to indict the police officer who took his life. Once again, a grand jury’s decision denied us all the valuable opportunity to have this case heard in a public trial. We welcome news from Attorney General Eric Holder that the Justice Department is launching its own investigation into Eric Garner’s death. We will continue to stand with our LGBT and civil rights community partners as we speak out against injustice and work together to bring a measure of accountability in this case.”
