TLDEF Commemorates International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund stands in solidarity with advocates around the globe in observing the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. IDAHOT highlights the ongoing discrimination and violence confronting LGBTQI people worldwide. The international event began in 2004 with the goal of persuading policymakers, opinion leaders, and the media to pay attention, take action and help establish a climate where LGBTQI people are protected and treated equally. More than 130 countries will mark the occasion, including dozens where it is illegal to be openly LGBTQI.

Statement from TLDEF Executive Director Jillian Weiss

“On this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we reflect on the challenges we face as a global LGBTQI community and rededicate ourselves to standing strong against hate, bias and oppression. In the U.S. we have lost nearly a dozen transgender people to violence in the first 5 months of 2017 alone. These daunting statistics motivate us to work even harder to educate our societies about the unique contributions transgender people make that add to the rich fabric of humanity. While obstacles remain, we will never waiver in our efforts to dismantle bias and create a world where LGBTQI people are accepted, respected and protected under the law.”
