Name Change Project Participants Speak Out!
With more than 200 people served by TLDEF's Name Change Project since its 2007 inception, we thought it was time to check in with Project participants to find out how they felt about it. Here's what they had to say:
Stevie: "My whole experience with TLDEF and the Name change project was quite incredible. Thank you simply isn't BIG enough a word. Both Michael Silverman and Barbara Shulman's assistance provided me with a virtual security blanket... a metaphorical hand to hold through the entire process from beginning to end. What potentially could have been a scary process to handle alone was quite the opposite and Chan from the law firm of Debovoise and Plimpton was both sincere and professional. I am ever so grateful for all that TLDEF and the Name Change Project have done for me."
Elias: "I think the process of reclaiming my name as something of personal meaning has been an important part of my experience as a transgender person. Changing my name was a way of repossessing part of my identity after concluding that the name I had been given at birth was not mine anymore. I am immensely grateful for the counsel provided to me through The Name Change Project. My lawyer was prompt and respectful throughout the process."
Rhys: "Transgender Legal Defense’s Name Change Project was indispensable in the process of getting my name legally changed. I would have had no clue how to get started on a legal name change by myself. Even the first step (just getting an official request for my birth certificate notarized) seemed daunting. I didn't have the money to take on the lengthy project by myself. The Name Change Project took care of everything for me, every step of the way. They did all the leg work. All I had to do was go in a few times to get the process started and sign a few forms. The law firm they paired me up with was great. They were gracious, professional, trans-friendly, and sensitive to my specific needs.
It was a GREAT experience and I'm completely grateful to the program.
Keep up the good work."
Jay: "I am so grateful that I was able to access the services that the Name Change Project offers. Barbara did a wonderful job of intake and of explaining the process to me, and followed up throughout the whole process. The attorney who handled my case was friendly, polite, informative, and made sure that I was well-represented as a client. We in NYC are very lucky to have access to such high-quality legal services for our community. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Name Change Project to any transperson who is looking for guidance in this all-important and somewhat intimidating step of transition."
