April 29, 2014 - We praise the U.S. Department of Education for taking steps to protect transgender students in school districts across the nation. The agency has issued guidance which specifies that discrimination against transgender students is prohibited under the federal Title IX law. Title IX bans public schools in the United States from excluding students from educational programs or activities on the basis of sex.

Statement from TLDEF Executive Director Michael Silverman:

“Today’s announcement from the U.S. Department of Education is a positive turning point in the fight to level the playing field for transgender students in this country. This important Title IX guidance will allow students who have experienced anti-transgender discrimination in schools to seek redress through the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.

“Having helped many young people experiencing discrimination in their schools, including 6-year-old Coy Mathis in Colorado, we know all-too-well the importance of protecting transgender students and ensuring they are in school environments that allow them to thrive. The Department of Education’s affirmation that Title IX protects transgender students is a step forward for equality.”
